不知他是睡;

"He doesn't want me around"

General Iroh: "I know he doesn't want me around right now, but if he needs me, I'll be there"

Toph: "Your nephew is very lucky, even if he doesn't know it"

***********************************************

How often do we not realize there are people who really care for us around us, loving us, caring for us, concern of us?

How often do others not realize there are us standing beside them, loving them, caring for them and concern of them?

How does it feel to stand beside a person you care for but feel invisible?

If it hurts to do so, would you still stand with the one you love?

Will you allow all you effort to be gone unseen? Silently giving, contributing, loving, caring...

Will u?

I have a PhD yet I drive a taxi?

I was browsing the newspapers this morning and was shocked to come across this news article! I've known for sometime that the higher you climb up the academic ladder, the more specialized you are in a particular field (the more expert you are in that specific field). At the same time, this phenomenon is a double-edged sword which means you are less wiser in the other fields, making it rather hard for you to jump into different fields. I've tried to share this thought with a close friend of mine but unfortunately my ideas were shoved away. But this news article really comes as a wake up call to everyone. Have a read on how a PhD holder with years of working experience had to go down until driving a taxi. Nonetheless, his courage is admirable...

Driven to driving a taxi despite having a PhD

Bio-chemist Dr Cai Minnjie who failed to land another research position after losing his job last year now happily prowls the streets as a cabbie.

SINGAPORE’S fraternity of taxi drivers, with its fair share of retrenched executives, has now an exalted new member – a PhD bio-chemist from Stanford University.

Prowling the streets of Singapore today is 57-year-old unemployed scientist Dr Cai Mingjie who lost his job at Singapore’s premier A-Star biomedical research institute last year.

The China-born naturalised citizen with 16 years of research accomplishments said he began driving a taxi last October after failed efforts to land another job.

The news shocked this nation, which holds an unshakable faith in the power of an advanced university education.

One surprised white-collar worker said he had believed that such a doctorate and experience was as good as life-long employment and success.

“If he has to drive a taxi, what chances do ordinary people like us have?” he asked.

I have met a number of highly qualified taxi drivers in recent years, including former managers and a retrenched engineer.

One cheerful driver – a former stock-broker – surprised me one day in giving me detailed reasons on what stocks to buy or avoid.

“At a time like this, the taxi business is probably the only business in Singapore that still actively recruits people,” said Dr Cai.

To me, his plight is taking Singapore into a new chapter.

“(I am) probably the only taxi driver in the world with a PhD from Stanford and a proven track record of scientific accomplishments ...,” blogged Dr Cai.

“I have been forced out of my research job at the height of my scientific career” and was unable to find another job “for reasons I can only describe as something uniquely Singapore”.

The story quickly spread far and wide over the Internet. Most Singaporeans expressed admiration for his ability to adapt so quickly to his new life. Two young Singaporeans asked for his taxi number, saying they would love to travel in his cab and talk to him.

“There’s so much he can pass on to me,” one said.

Others questioned why, despite his tremendous scientific experience, he is unable to find a teaching job.

His unhappy exit is generally attributed to a personal cause (he has alleged chaotic management by research heads) rather than any decline in Singapore’s bio-tech project, which appears to be surviving the downturn.

The case highlights a general weakening of the R and D (research and development) market in smallish Singapore.

“The bad economy means not many firms are hiring professional scientists,” one surfer said. “Academia isn’t much of a help – there’s a long history of too many PhDs chasing too few jobs.”

While the image of taxi drivers has received a tremendous boost, the same cannot be said of Singapore’s biomedical project – particularly its efforts to nourish home-grown research talent.

“It may turn more Singaporeans away from Life Sciences as a career,” said one blogger.

One writer said: “In my opinion, PhDs are useless, especially in Singapore. It’s just another certificate and doesn’t mean much.”

Another added: “The US is in a worse situation. Many are coming here to look for jobs.”

“I won’t want my child to study for years to end up driving a taxi,” said a housewife with a teenage daughter.

The naturalised Singaporean citizen underwent his PhD training at Stanford University, the majority of his work revolving around the study of yeast proteins.

His case is not unique. US research-scientist Douglas Prasher, who isolated the gene that creates the green fluorescent protein (and just missed the 2008 Chemistry Nobel Prize) faced similar straits.

Prasher moved from one research institution to another when his funding dried up, and he eventually quit science – to drive a courtesy shuttle in Alabama.

“Still, he remains humble and happy and seems content with his minivan driver job,” said a surfer.

With an evolving job market as more employers resort to multi-tasking and short-term contracts, more Singaporeans are chasing after split degrees, like accountancy and law or computer and business.

Others avoid post-graduate studies or specialised courses of a fixed discipline in favour of general or multi-discipline studies. “Experience is king” is the watchword; there has been a rush for no-pay internships.

“The future favours graduates with multiple skills and career flexibility, people who are able to adapt to different types of work,” one business executive said.

During the past few years, as globalisation deepened, there has been a growing disconnect between what Singaporeans studied in university and their subsequent careers.

It follows the trend in the developed world where old businesses disappear – almost overnight – and new ones spring up, which poses problems for graduates with an inflexible job expectation.

I know of a young man who graduated from one of America’s top civil engineering universities abandoning the construction hard hat for a teaching gown.

Another engineer I met is running his father’s lucrative coffee shop. Lawyers have become musicians or journalists, and so on.

Cases of people working in jobs unrelated to their university training have become so common that interviewers have stopped asking candidates questions like “Why should a trained scientist like you want to work as a junior executive with us?”

In the past, parents would crack their heads pondering what their children should study – accountancy or law or engineering, the so-called secure careers – and see them move single-mindedly into these professions.

A doctor was then a doctor, a biologist generally worked in the lab and a lawyer argued cases in courts – square pegs in square holes, so to speak.

Today the world is slowly moving away from this neat pattern.

Today's Summary

I found out an interesting thing today. Kak Aniza actually have the same background as I do!!! Okok, maybe I should put it in the other way round, since she is older, so I should say I have the same background as she! LOL~~ What background? hmmmm... Ask me personally... hahaha.. Thanks for helping me with the documents... Yes, a promise is a promise, I've never broken a promise before, and I will not.. hehe.. A treat from me after your puasa ends!!! hehehe... Hope your children recovers soon from HFMD...

Somebody screwed up my experiment today! Yes, I spent SGD400 on my experiment and I noticed the results were very peculiar. I've done the experiment so many times, but this is the first time I got a result which I could not explain. The trend looks too weird. Talked to KS about it, she could not understand it too. I suspect it's the black guy, coz he took the SYBR that I was using. There must be some sort of contamination in it. sigh.. Have to repeat the experiment... But never mind, the procedure is rather fun! LOL~~ I don't mind repeating it!! hehe...

Still trying hard to complete my article.. LOL~~ A lot of info to gather. Hope can finish it soon... Nite...

Presentation Today

Die Die Die!!!!

No No No...

I shouldn't be saying that! LOL~~

Later at 12 noon, I need to go do a presentation on Multi-drug Resistant Pathogen. Sienz... A few people over there can ask real hard questions which I'm afraid I can't answer.

But seriously, got no time to read and prepare since I need to do so many things concurrently. I totally hate multitasking!

I'm a person who loves to do things one by one. Complete one thing and then move on to another, so I can concentrate on each one and produce the best results. Multitasking means you divide your concentration to everywhere which means you cannot give your best at every field, only producing above average results for each field you invested your effort in.

But a good part about multitasking is that you can complete multiple task at once whereas the one by one task handling method I use will take a longer time. Got pros and cons laa if you look at this two methods.. But I really appreciate the final results better, so I go for the one by one method. I basically practice it in everything in my life including problems which pops up now n then.. hehe.. U guys figure out urself wat is suitable laa... then use it to ur benefit.. jia you...

Sigh...

Hope all things go well later.

Well, look at the bright side! I get to talk in front of so many people to entertain everybody with my not-so-good English and presentation skills again, and make everybody lafu!!! hahaha >.<|| (I'm not a clown...) Wish me luck!! PS:
- JY: hope you can recover completely since u successfully completed your treatment!
- SB: nobody has heard about your condition after you went through second brain surgery, really hope you did well too!! Will try to ask Sharon how it was, but I think she balik Ireland for holidays edi.

Living without Arms & Legs, can you do it?

Saw this video this morning. It really have a lot of inspiration of how one should live one's life. Have a look at it.. Try to understand its meaning.. We often hear people say, to get up when you fall down, but how many of us can really do it? That's the real question...

General Iroh: A Cup of Tea

Toph: "I know what you are thinking, I look like I can't handle being by myself" (Toph is blind)

General Iroh: "I wasn't thinking that"

Toph: "You wouldn't even let me pour my own cup of tea"

General Iroh: "I pour your tea because I wanted to, and for no other reason"

Toph: "People see me and think I'm weak, they want to take care of me, but I can take care of myself by myself"

General Iroh: "You sound like my nephew, always thinking you need to do things on your own without anyone's support. There's nothing wrong with letting people who love you help you, not that I love you, I'd just met you"
*****************************************************
This is an excerpt taken from Avatar: The Last Airbender anime between General Iroh of the Fire nation and Toph from the Earth Kingdom. Toph who is blind often feel like other people help her because they think she is incapable of doing things herself as she is blind. But from General Iroh's words, we can see that sometimes people just help you because they want to help, not because of any other reasons at all, it's just because they sincerely want to do somethings for you.

I need to change my hairstyle...

Since I couldn't watch GI Joe with JC they all on Saturday. Then I thought of watching it with Dan, but he wasn't a GI Joe enthusiast, so, had to watch alone. LOL~~

But anyway, after the movies, we still meet up at Jusco TC after he pass through the heavy traffic on the highway and go through the almost full parking lots. Hmmm.. He looks different. Not that much, but a little. Flora didn't come as she wants to sleep. o_O"

What did we do that day ah? Oh Ya, we were looking for a place to sit down but even at 3pm, all the shops were full!! Yes... Secret Recipe, Ayamas, Pizza Hut, KFC, Kenny Rogers, all full!!! So we ended up at Sakae Sushi (Shhhh.. I didn't know there is a Sakae Sushi in Jusco leh.... hehehe)

Sat down and talk talk and eat eat sushi! We got scammed by a plate of 'fried bread'!! Hahaha.. yes yes, it was just fried bread, and it was RM2! hahahaha..

Haven't seen this guy for quite sometime already lor... really nice to chat with him... Haha... He has a very very busy life compared to me.. Hehe.. I don't like a hectic and busy life, so I often arrange things so that I always have free time to day dream. LOL~~~ Yea yea, u can find me day dreaming as though I'm some koala bear hanging on the tree.. doing what?! sleeping of coz.. hahaha...I wonder how he handles it. Amazing.. hehe...

After that, we went window shopping.. To the electronic shop to look at camera, laptops, then go to Sony Shop, then camera shop. Then we went to look at clothes! From Hush Puppies, to ESPRIT to WH Muscle to TopMan (this is the brand hor?! LOL~~) Hmm... a few nice clothes which I want to buy.. Hahahaha... but I didn't... but I promised myself, if I get what I want, I will buy them to pamper myself a bit. The jacket at Hush Puppies is a definite buy! The sweater from Forest is nice too. Hehe..

Oh ya, out of the sudden when trying the Hush Puppies jacket, Dan said "You should change your hairstyle, always cut short short like that"... Hmmm.. but hor, I got no sense of fashion wan wor... haha.. I really duno how to change hairstyle or what hairstyle to change. Hehe... Really no idea, I wear shirt also wear those which I feel comfortable with, don't really care about design or brand.

So, I guess I shall appoint Dan as my Hair Style Consultant... Hehehe...

Thanks to Dan for spending like 4 hours with me in Jusco on Sunday evening... Hehe...

PS: Good luck to Sure-win in studies... Take care...

GI Joe

Went watching GI Joe on Sunday alone. Hehe. At first, planned to watch with a few people, but unfortunately kYi & kJin weren't available. And then, I think it would be best that I don't go out alone with JC due to some issues which happened recently with somebody who seriously misunderstood me of something which i don't really know. LOL~~ But I don't want to think of that anymore. Paiseh ah... JC... Hehe... You understand what I mean right?! Nonetheless, thank you so much for offering to watch the movie with me. At least I know there is someone out there that trusts me. Hehe... Yiiiii... sounds a little mushy (肉麻).. haha..

Anyway, I watched the movie. And it was great!! Seriously nice, love the high-tech gadgets and mobile suits (Delta 6 Accelerator) which is supposed to cost millions! LOL~~ *if you watched the movie, you would get the joke! haha.. the part where he was getting out of the van*

I love watching the cartoon some years ago. And now, seeing it as a movie!! AMAZING!!!!!! hahaha...

The battle scenes were amazing. Don't you just love the action in the military. The fire power of the cannons and missiles. Oh ya, the Cobra's have Pulser. Which was wayyyyyyyyy cool! One blast and you go flying like cows in a tornado!!!

This action packed movie is comparable to Terminator Salvation & Transformers: Rise of the Fallen. Totally love it!!! Storm Shadow's ninjutsu was cool!! his moves was great, that flying dart thing woohooo!! hahaha... Who needs guns when you have such cool moves with katana in both hands. His brother, Snake-eye was amazing too, but I wished he could speak abit. *He took the oath of silence after Storm Shadow, also considered his elder bro in the dojo killed the Master.

Hmm.. What next?! What next?! I didn't see any good movie trailer liao leh.. seems like this is the last hottest movie of the year?! OMG... I still have another 4 lonely months to live before the end of the year leh... sienz... more movie plz... lol~~~

"When all else fails, we don't"- General Hawk

Btw, Scarlet said something real cool which I don't believe in.. It goes something like this:

"Attraction is an emotion which can't be quantified or measured, since it can't be explain in Science, hence, I don't believe it"

Sounds cool..

Scold People Using Nobel Laurette Story

Recently I saw with my own eyes how people scold using a big 'round-about'. Normally when we scold others, we just shoot directly, but this is totally different. This was such an indirect way of scolding. The following is the conversation:-

T: "Did you write this?" *showing a form to P*
P: "..." *staring at the form*

T: "Did you or did you not fill up this form?"
P: *Staring hard at the form*

T: "Do you understand the words coming out of my mouth?"
P: "Yes"

T: "So did you write this?"
P: *nods*

T: "Ok, now I want to ask you, is this your last job?"
P: O_O

T: "I'm asking you, is this your last job?"
P: "..."

P: "?????" *looks lost*

T: "You still don't get what I mean? Is this your last job? I mean are you going to work here until you retire??? 当然不是啦!!你会找别的工的是吗!!"
P: *nods*

T: "When you want to find job, you need his recommendation letter right?"
P: "Yes"

T: "Now, if your boss is a Nobel Laurette, do you think people will employ you?"
P: "Har?!"

T: "Ok Ok.. I will say it again... If your boss is a Nobel Laurette, and he writes you a letter of recommendation, will you get a job? Will people employ you?"
P: "..."
T: *stares at Teddy* "Do you think he will get a job?"
Ted: *Nods*

T: "Sure la, right or not?! Nobel Laurette write letter for you, who won't hire you?! But if your boss looks like an idiot! And he write a recommendation for you, do you think people would hire you?"
P: o_O"

T: "Do you get what I'm trying to say?? If your boss looks like an idiot from don't know where, do you think people would trust his recommendation??"
P: "..."

T: "You wrote all this on behalf of him. But if you did so many mistakes, how would others think of him? Especially when all these are going to people high up there.. Do you get what I mean?"
P: "..."
T: "Why no response? Do you need me to speak in Chinese? 你需要我讲华语吗?"

T: *Stares at Teddy* "Do you understand what I just said?"
Teddy: *nods*
T: "Good.. Can you please explain to him in Chinese? Because he is angry now, and he can't understand what I've just said, can you please explain to him, I need to go for lunch"

LOL~~~ This was the most indirect way of scolding which I've ever seen.. Extremely insulting, even though it is sarcastic!!

Aniza's son came running back from the toilet.

Son: "Mummy!! Mummy!!! Kak Ayu so clever!!! She make my penis small again!!!!!"

OMG!!! LOL~~~ Children nowadays can really speak!!!!!! YUCKS!!!!!! hahahaha....

Sports Dominated by Chinese

When I saw the volleyball game in CS the other day, it gave me this thought about the sports in Malaysia which have been dominated by the Chinese.

There are three sports which came into mind. First of all is Volleyball. I’ve watched countless Volleyball matches for state and national levels but most of the players in the teams are often Chinese, you don’t even see Indians in them.

The second sport is the Basketball. Have you seen other races on the court during competition? Yes, I know you do. But which is the majority? Chinese right?!

The third and the most obvious, which if I forget to mention will make everyone bash me up!! LOL~~ Yes, it is Ping Pong aka Table Tennis. This is the most obvious sport which is dominated and conquered by the Chinese. Why do I say so? If there is a Ping Pong competition coming up in your school. Did you notice that the competition is divided into Malay and Non-Malay Categories? The Chinese & Indians can only participate in the Non-Malay Categories. Hence, they never meet the Malay players in the Ping Pong match.

I’m sure there are no such things as being a certain race means you are good at that particular sports. But it does make me wonder why certain sports are dominated by certain races?! Kind of weird right? Especially when only that particular race seems to excel in it.

Anyone know why? Do tell me if you know…

Volleyball at CitySquare JB ~@@~

Wow, I've never expected to actually see a volleyball game inside a shopping mall before!! It is amazing.

I've no idea it was between which schools. But I guess one of the team was Bukit Jalil Sports School because I saw a lot of girls eating McFlurry wearing the school t-shirt! Hehe.. And GOSH!!!! The entire group of girls were tall!!! yes yes.. very tall.. all around 180cm in height..

I only got time to look at the match for 15 minutes. Too bad.. I haven't really watched any volleyball matches for a long long time liao. Really missed it. It can be real exciting sometimes.

The 15 minutes match was a little slow in my opinion. Not to say that both teams are not good but they seem to lack the 'fire'.

Their servings was soft. I'm not sure if this was their tactic. But if you follow state competitions or international levels, you will noticed that the teams would generally take the 'first kill'!! Their servings are extremely powerful.

Generally there are three servings if I can recall correctly, one, serve using the top of your fist, two, throw the ball and hit with palm on the spot, three, throw the ball, run, jump and hit with palm. The third style is commonly used in international level due to the power of serving which may catch the opposing team of guard.

I learn a new rule in volley also. Generally, you can only use your hands to touch the ball. But yesterday, there was a guy that kicked the ball to stop the ball from touching his own area. There was not penalty from the referee, hence I guess this is a new regulation implemented. Hehe.. Surprising but interesting!! Generally, a nice game! haha... wished I could follow the entire game...
